Network to Eliminate Disparities in Behavioral Health Offers a Free Eight-Session Training for Implementing the Latino MultiFamily Group Program in a Local Mental Health Agncy

Dear Colleague:

This is to let you know about an eight-session training for implementing the Latino MultiFamily Group program in a local mental health agency. It is being offered free of charge through the National Network to Eliminate Disparities in Behavioral Health (NNED). NNED is hosting a webinar-assisted telephone conference call to preview the training on Thursday May 5, 2011 from 2-3 pm EDT.

The call will provide an overview of the main activities involved in implementing the Latino MultiFamily Group (MFG) program, an evidence-based program to increase involvement of Spanish-speaking Latino Families in services for adolescent family members with mental health disorders like depression and ADHD. The Latino MFG is based on the well-validated MultiFamily Group program, developed by Dr. William McFarlane at Maine Medical Center.

In controlled research MFG has shown powerful effects for adults with serious mental illnesses, including substantial reductions in re-hospitalization rates and other positive outcomes. It also has been used successfully in adaptations with adolescents and with Spanish-speaking Latino families, including a recently-completed seven-year study for the National Institute of Mental Health. The principal investigator of that study, psychiatrist and Olive View-UCLA Medical Center Chief of Psychiatry, Dr. Alex Kopelowicz, who is also President of the Latino Behavioral Health Institute, will lead the call.

After the call, interested participants can apply to join an NNED Community of Practice (CoP), which will offer eight one-hour webinar sessions covering the basics of implementing the Latino MFG. The CoP also will offer an online discussion forum, materials that can be downloaded, and individualized technical assistance - all free of charge. You can get more information about NNED’s CoP activities by going to:
